29/06/2026 - 11:03 UTC +02:00Iberdrola turns to Finnish satellite technology from ICEYE to strengthen its power networks against extreme weather Iberdrola has selected satellite technology developed by Finnish company ICEYE for an innovation project designed to make its electricity networks more resilient to extreme weather events. Using near real-time geospatial data, the solution will help the company anticipate risks, assess damage more quickly and minimise disruption to electricity supplies. The solution, which won one of the New-Tech Challenges in Iberdrola’s international open innovation programme, PERSEO , driven by the Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub , will initially be rolled out through a pilot project in Spain . More than 40 proposals from ten countries took part in the challenge. During the pilot, ICEYE's constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites will provide continuous monitoring of selected areas, enabling Iberdrola to anticipate and track events such as floods, wildfires and high winds. The satellites can capture images around the clock, regardless of weather conditions. By providing rapid, objective assessments, even when affected areas are difficult to access, Iberdrola will be able to identify the most heavily impacted assets, deploy repair crews more efficiently and restore electricity supplies more quickly. Iberdrola operates more than 1.4 million kilometres of transmission and distribution lines across several countries, serving millions of customers. Building on the experience gained in Spain, the programme will also give Iberdrola access to ICEYE's rapid damage assessment capabilities for hurricanes affecting its assets in the United States and Australia, with detailed damage maps available within 24 hours of an event. Gonzalo García-Muñoz, Senior Vice-President of Global Operations and CEO of ICEYE Spain, said: "This collaboration enables us to integrate satellite intelligence into network operations, identify risks earlier and accelerate the restoration of electricity supplies in affected areas." Óscar Villanueva, Director of the Western Region at i-DE Smart Grids, Iberdrola's distribution business in Spain, said: "Strengthening the resilience of our electricity networks is one of our top priorities. This collaboration allows us to incorporate advanced observation and analytical capabilities that help us anticipate extreme weather events, minimise their impact on customers and build a more resilient electricity system for the future." 25/06/2026 - 16:20 UTC +02:00Iberdrola inaugurates Fénix, its largest photovoltaic plant in Italy with 243 MW Iberdrola has inaugurated its largest photovoltaic plant in Italy in Sicily. With 243 MW, Fénix is already in operation and its annual production is close to 400,000 MWh, enough to cover the equivalent consumption of more than 140,000 homes. Located between the municipalities of Centuripe, Paternò and Belpasso, in the provinces of Enna and Catania, Fénix reinforces the country's clean and indigenous generation capacity. The facility, whose construction has been carried out by more than 500 professionals at the peak, has more than 413,000 bifacial photovoltaic modules and is connected to the electricity system through 26 kilometres of medium voltage lines and 9 kilometres of high voltage lines. This is a key infrastructure to boost the electrification of the productive fabric: most of its production is committed through long-term purchase agreements (PPAs ) with top-tier Italian companies, which helps to stabilise its energy costs, guarantee security of supply and strengthen its competitiveness. The opening ceremony was attended by Hugh Elliott, executive president of Iberdrola Energía Internacional, and Valerio Faccenda, country manager of Iberdrola Italia, as well as institutional representatives, including Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, Spanish ambassador to Italy, as well as regional and municipal authorities. Fénix is a milestone in Iberdrola's growth in Italy . Its implementation contributes to a safer, self-sufficient, sustainable and efficient energy model that boosts job creation, industrial competitiveness and the well-being of communities. Project financed by the European Investment Bank. READ MORE

25/06/2026Iberdrola and bp advance green hydrogen development as a key enabler of electrification Iberdrola España, the Iberdrola Group's subsidiary in Spain , and bp have received approval from Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), to reallocate up to €211 million in funding from the Hy2USE IPCEI programme to their project in Castellón. The funding will allow the companies to explore opportunities to expand renewable hydrogen production at bp’s refinery in Castellón. The project is part of the strategic partnership between Iberdrola and bp to develop new energy solutions that help industrial customers replace natural gas with renewable energy produced in Spain. Renewable hydrogen could also play an important role in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as ceramics and chemicals, further strengthening its contribution to the energy transition. The facility, which also involves the Energy Technology Institute (ITE) in Valencia and has secured an additional €15 million through the NextGenerationEU programme, is expected to begin producing renewable hydrogen before the end of this year. By 2026, it is set to become the largest operational green hydrogen plant in Spain. The project reflects Iberdrola’s commitment to innovation and to scaling up renewable technologies that support the electrification of the economy. 24/06/2026 - 19:18 UTC +02:00Iberdrola is building its first large-scale battery in the United States Iberdrola is expanding its investments in energy storage into the United States market with the construction of its first battery facility in the country. The Shutler project, located in Gilliam County, Oregon, has an installed capacity of 41 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 82 megawatt-hours (MWh). Shutler will help to strengthen the stability of the electricity grid in the north-west of the country, on the Pacific coast, where Avangrid — the Group’s US subsidiary — already has 3,000 MW of generation capacity. The project forms part of Iberdrola’s strategy to implement solutions that facilitate the integration of renewable energy and improve the system’s resilience against a backdrop of growing electricity demand. The project will enable energy to be stored during periods of low consumption or high renewable generation and released when necessary, optimising the energy system and promoting a real-time balance between supply and demand. This type of infrastructure is becoming increasingly important in the context of growing electrification. The project, which is scheduled to come on stream in 2027, will be located alongside other Avangrid renewable energy facilities already in operation or under development in the area. READ MORE
