24/02/2025 - 12:46 UTC +01:00Iberdrola España begins commissioning of the Valdecañas pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Spain Iberdrola España , Iberdrola's subsidiary in Spain, has begun commissioning the Valdecañas pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Cáceres, Extremadura, in the southwest of the country, which has a total capacity of 225 MW and a hybridised 15 MW battery. This power plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 200,000 tonnes per year and will create 165 direct and 500 indirect jobs, increasing skilled positions available and benefiting the local economy. The reversible power plant helps balance the consumption and demand curve, stabilising the electricity grid by storing and recovering energy as needed. The project has had minimal impact during its execution, taking advantage of existing infrastructure and without needing to lay new transmission lines. The commissioning of Valdecañas consolidates Iberdrola España's commitment to hydroelectric storage, adding to other recent projects in Portugal and Spain. Iberdrola España currently has 18 pumped hydro plants with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW. You can read the full story at Iberdrola España's Communication Room . READ MORE

This collaboration will focus on various electricity grid and renewable energy projects in different countries. Both companies see this new agreement as a strategic milestone that will allow them to jointly explore other investment opportunities in different technologies and regions within the renewable energy and electricity grid industry. The agreement strengthens the relations of both companies, following the co-investment in the Windanker offshore wind farm at the end of December 2024. The Windanker offshore wind farm, located in the German Baltic, will have an installed capacity of 315 MW and will be operational in the last quarter of 2026. Iberdrola has a majority stake of 51% and provides operation and maintenance services, while Kansai, Japan's second largest electricity company and one of the largest in Asia, holds the remaining 49%. In addition, both companies have jointly invested in the Electricity North West (ENW) group , the electricity distribution network operator in the United Kingdom. Iberdrola has an 88% stake and the consortium led by Kansai owns the remaining 12%. Iberdrola, a global leader in energy and a benchmark in the sector for its sustainable business model, has invested more than 160,000 million euros since 2001 to develop a clean, safe, autonomous and competitive energy model, making it a strategic partner for the Japanese electricity company. For its part, Kansai has committed to achieving carbon neutrality in all its business activities by 2050, expanding renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency. Partnerships for growth The alliance policy is Iberdrola's strategy to accelerate its growth and promote the decarbonisation of the economy while maintaining its financial strength. In addition to the agreements with Kansai, the company chaired by Ignacio Galán has made the following agreements in recent months: * The sale of the Baixo Iguaçu hydroelectric plant to EDF and STOA . * In January 2023, it signed an alliance with Norges Bank to co-invest in renewables that, after its expansion, will reach 2,500 MW. * In December 2023, Iberdrola closed an agreement with Masdar to co-invest up to €15,000 million in offshore wind and green hydrogen in Germany, the United Kingdom and the US, the first milestone of which was the agreement for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in Germany. * In September 2023, the company closed an alliance with GIC for the expansion of transmission networks in Brazil for 430 million euros. * The company sold more than 8,400 MW of combined cycle gas in Mexico last February for 6,200 million dollars. * In March 2023, Iberdrola and BP launched a joint venture to deploy 11,700 fast-charging points in Spain and Portugal and have formed a 50/50 joint venture to develop a 25 MW green hydrogen project, the largest plant in Spain. * Iberdrola and MAPFRE have continued to make progress in their strategic alliance by incorporating 150 new MW through a joint venture, which already has 450 MW. * In addition, Iberdrola signed an alliance with Energy Infrastructure Partner s to co-invest in the Wikinger offshore wind farm and boost its offshore wind portfolio. 14/02/2025 - 14:34 UTC +01:00Iberdrola España and ANFAC join forces to promote electric mobility in Spain Iberdrola España and ANFAC (the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers) have joined forces to promote the implementation of electric mobility in Spain, the only emission-free option currently available that also allows for progress in energy independence. Both organisations consider this alliance key to promoting the sale of electric vehicles more strongly, definitively driving forward the development of public access charging infrastructure and advocating the implementation of effective public policies and incentives to meet the targets set by Europe and established in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). Electric mobility not only facilitates the reduction of emissions and the improvement of air quality in cities, but also represents an economic boost to the country, both in the manufacture of vehicles and the construction of charging stations. These are areas that help to generate employment and foster innovation and the development of new technologies in the mobility and renewable energy sectors. Iberdrola, with more than 8,400 charging points with a 100% renewable guarantee of origin (GO) in operation in Spain and 4,000 more in different phases of installation or activation, is the leading infrastructure operator. For its part, ANFAC, the main representative of the automotive sector in Spain, with more than 60 associated brands, makes them key partners in facing the challenges and opportunities posed by the electrification of mobility. 13/02/2025 - 16:19 UTC +01:00Construction underway on subsea electricity superhighway in the North Sea Construction has started on a subsea electricity superhighway which will help expand the grid for the future. As well as supporting long-term local development for regional communities playing host to the critical electricity infrastructure. Eastern Green Link 1 , a joint venture between SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission, will transport green electricity for two million homes along over 190km of predominantly undersea cable linking the south-east of Scotland with the north-east of England. The £2.5bn project was given the green light by Ofgem last year and onshore works are now underway with offshore construction due to start in the summer. At the cable’s two landfall points, Torness, in East Lothian, and Hawthorn Pit, in County Durham, two converter stations will be built to change the electricity from alternating to direct current – the most efficient way for it to travel long distances. Specialist boats are then used to lay the cable across the seabed and bury it throughout the route before connecting it to the grid. Today in Torness, SP Energy Networks CEO, Nicola Connelly and National Grid Electricity Transmission President of Strategic Infrastructure, Carl Trowell, were joined by Minister for Housing and MSP for East Lothian, Paul McLennan, to mark construction getting underway. Together, SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission already own and operate the Western Link, the world’s highest capacity subsea cable, and one of the longest, connecting Hunterston in Scotland to Connah’s Quay in Wales. Operational since 2017, the link supported over 450 jobs during planning and development and has transmitted over 30,000GWh of electricity during its first five years of operation – enough to power all the homes in Wales for the same period.
