Iberdrola in Portugal

Portugal, a strategic market for renewables and storage

Portugal Iberdrola International

Portugal has become a key country for Iberdrola thanks to its commitment to renewable energy, energy storage through pumped-storage hydropower and sustainable electrification.

Since the creation of Iberdrola’s subsidiary in Lisbon in 2004, as part of its expansion strategy as an energy leader in European countries, the company has progressively strengthened its presence in Portugal through major investments in wind, solar and hydroelectric energy.

Iberdrola promotes pumped-storage hydropower from Portugal

The Iberdrola Group has turned Portugal into one of its main renewable development hubs in Europe, with flagship projects such as the Tâmega Gigabattery. This complex, one of the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric facilities on the continent, has involved an investment of more than €1.5 billion and has a total installed capacity of 1,158 MW. It also became a pioneer in 2026 by becoming the first wind-hydro hybrid project connected to the grid in the Iberian Peninsula.

This major investment in hydropower in the country is complemented by the growth of its photovoltaic and wind facilities, as well as its commitment to innovation, electric mobility and support for Portuguese technology startups linked to sustainability.
