Iberdrola in Greece

A renewable energy leader in the eastern Mediterranean

Iberdrola International Greece

Thanks to its vertically integrated business model, Rokas Renewables is leading the development of renewable energy in Greece.

Iberdrola na Grecia
Rokas Renewables has been part of the Iberdrola Group since 2007.

The company is actively developing a portfolio of new onshore wind, solar photovoltaic projects and storage projects with the aim of significantly expanding its presence in the country over the coming years. The Greek market offers particularly favourable conditions for renewable energy, thanks to its outstanding wind and solar resources as well as emerging opportunities in island interconnections and offshore wind power.

Renewable energy pioneers in the heart of the Mediterranean

Iberdrola operates in Greece through Rokas Renewables (C. Rokas S.A.), a pioneer in the development of renewable energy in the country since the 1990s. Iberdrola completed its acquisition in 2007, finding in Rokas a partner with a shared vision: promoting electrification through renewable energy as a fundamental driver of sustainable economic growth.

Headquartered in Athens, Rokas Renewables has established itself as one of the leading renewable energy operators in the Greek market in terms of installed capacity. Its business model is vertically integrated: the design, development, construction, operation and maintenance of all projects are managed in-house, ensuring efficiency, quality and control throughout every stage of the assets' life cycle.

Greece is currently a strategic market for Iberdrola within the portfolio of Iberdrola Internacional, the subholding company responsible for the Group's international operations.

Iberdrola, a benchmark in the Greek wind energy sector

Among its most recent milestones, construction of the Mikronos wind farm (33.6MW in Rodopi province) was completed in 2022, significantly improving access to renewable electricity supply. In 2023, work was completed on the Rokani wind farm (18 MW, near Athens), capable of supplying 20,000 households with 100% clean energy, and Askio complex (88.2 MW), Iberdrola's most ambitious renewable project in Greece to date. Continuing this growth trajectory, construction of the Gatza (22.5 MW) wind farm was also completed in 2025.

Iberdrola’s business in Greece focuses on renewable generation, with the following technologies in operation and development:

  • Onshore wind

Rokas Renewables’ core technology since its origins. Iberdrola operates and has ready for commissioning 25 wind farms across different regions of Greece, consolidating its position as one of the country’s largest operators in terms of installed capacity.

  • Solar photovoltaic

Iberdrola operates four photovoltaic plants in Greece, a market with some of the highest levels of solar irradiation in Europe.

  • Energy storage

Rokas Renewables is actively developing storage projects to complement its renewable generation portfolio, in line with the Group’s strategy of investing in integrated clean energy solutions.

Driving sustainable development in Greece

Iberdrola’s growth in Greece is aligned with creating value for local communities. The company remains committed to the economic and social development of the regions where it operates by creating jobs, improving infrastructure and working in partnership with institutions such as the European Investment Bank, which in 2025 signed a €25.9 million green financing agreement with Rokas Renewables to support the development of new wind energy projects in the country.

The electrification of demand in Greece, which is accelerating its commitment to renewable energy, further strengthens Iberdrola’s strategic role in the market. The country’s competitive advantages – including exceptional wind and solar resources and opportunities in island interconnections, energy storage and offshore wind – mean that Greece will be a key driver of Iberdrola International’s growth in the coming years.
