Enlit Europe 2025 Congress

Iberdrola takes part in Enlit Europe 2025 in Bilbao

Foros Decarbonisation Electrical network

Iberdrola takes part once again in the Enlit Europe Congress, held this year from 18 to 20 November in Bilbao, the city where the Group’s corporate headquarters are located and with which Iberdrola maintains a close connection. The event aims to connect industries to promote the change of energy model towards a sustainable solution.

At Iberdrola Group, we consider grids to be a key factor both for the electrification of the economy.

What is Enlit?

Enlit is a global forum dedicated to addressing all aspects of the energy transition. Enlit Europe is the main annual event on the continent, with its location changing each year: Frankfurt in 2022, Paris in 2023, Milan in 2024 and Bilbao in 2025.

The goal of the event is to bring together multiple companies to foster connections and create synergies. To achieve this, presentations showcase new technologies that have the potential to transform the industry in the near future. The main topics addressed include digitalization, decarbonization and the electrification of the economy in harmony with the environment.

The congress is not the only activity organised by the forum. It also offers online presentations and courses that allow participants to apply new methodologies. In addition, the forum produces biweekly podcasts, newsletters, and an annual guide highlighting the most important advances of the year.

Enlit Europe 2025 in Bilbao

In 2025, the event will take place in Spain, specifically at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in the Basque capital. Bilbao, home to Iberdrola’s headquarters, has transformed into a global energy hub, making it the perfect setting for Enlit Europe 2025External link, opens in new window. . With Iberdrola at the centre, a surrounding ecosystem of large and small companies has emerged, driving the electrification of local and regional economies.

Enlit Europe 2025 brings together more than 15,000 energy sector professionals. The event provides an opportunity to discuss the most innovative solutions to today’s and tomorrow’s energy challenges. Attendees also are able to explore the latest technologies and products that are changing the way energy is generated, distributed, and consumed.

This event not only marks an important step on the road to cleaner and more sustainable energy but also consolidates Bilbao as one of the world's leading energy cities.

Iberdrola – the official Green Electrification Partner of Enlit Europe 2025 – sponsors two stands throughout the three-day event, located at 3.C30 and 6.C60.

The importance of grids in the energy transition

At Iberdrola Group, we consider grids to be a key factor both for the electrification of the economy and for the revitalisation of the territories we work in. We consider regulated assets –together with renewable energies–to be keys to our strategy.

Approximately two‑thirds of our current investment plan (€36 million) is dedicated to expanding and strengthening our distribution and transmission networks, with the aim of increasing our regulated asset base to €70 billion by 2028. Investment in networks is key to continuously improving service quality and ensuring robust, resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme weather events while minimizing their impact on customers. In addition, it allows us to connect more demand, which reduces costs for end customers by spreading system expenses across a larger number of participants.

We already operate one of the world’s most important distribution systems, with 1.3 million kilometres of distribution and transmission lines, more than 4,500 substations and over 1.6 million transformers, built and operated to provide a high-quality and reliable service to more than 34 million electricity supply points.

At Iberdrola, we continue to work on the modernisation, digitalisation and automation of grids as key to improving the quality of the distribution system and guaranteeing the massive incorporation of renewables in the near future, as well as to promote the electrification of mobility, buildings and industry. At the same time, we promote jobs in electricity grids as a growing area with enormous potential for various professional profiles.

Enlit on the Road

Another major event organised by Enlit is Enlit on the Road. This initiative focuses on how the energy transition is progressing in some of Europe's major cities. The last On the Road was held in Valencia.

This meeting connected companies, industries and suppliers through digitalisation, energy transition and electrification, organised by Enlit Europa, with the support of Iberdrola and the collaboration of the Energy Cluster of Valencia, institutions and companies in the industry.

During the event, the importance of smart grids was highlighted, which are indispensable for bringing clean and competitive energy to families and businesses safely and reliably.

Iberdrola at the Enlit Europe 2024 Congress

In 2024, Enlit held its event at the Milan Fair on 23 and 24 October. It was attended by 15,000 people, 700 exhibitors and 450 people who participated in the Congress, where Iberdrola was present. Several senior executives of our company have drawn some key conclusions from the event to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, clean and efficient model:

Electrification is essential to promote industrialisation, which requires major investments in networks

In a panel about sustainability and competitiveness, Ana Lafuente, Networks Global Director, argued that the best way to promote Europe’s industrialization is electrification, which requires a significant network investment increase. Lafuente added that such investment is key to the stability and reliability of supply, enabling the integration of renewable energy and ensuring that electricity reaches all customers efficiently and safely.

Regulatory certainty is paramount to re-booting the energy transition

Álvaro Ryan, Regulation director at i-DE, explained that regulatory certainty is paramount to re-booting the energy transition, alongside the removal of barriers such as investment limits and excessive permitting, and the promotion of anticipatory investments. In a roundtable dedicated to regulation, Ryan said regulatory frameworks should also adapt to new types of investment, particularly in digital and innovation areas.

Digitalization offers great opportunities to enhance quality of service

Marta Solaz, Business Information Security Officer at i-DE, stressed the importance of providing excellent service to customers and meet Net Zero commitments. However, risks should not be underplayed, namely cyber threats. A complex and more digitalized network increases the attack surface. Utilities must prioritize securing their processes, including supply chain (a potential backdoor for cyberattacks) by using control mechanisms that will reduce risk and protect their critical infrastructure and the service delivered to their customers.

At Enlit we have the opportunity to meet with the key agents in the ecosystem for the electrification of the economy, essential for the integration of renewables, sustainable mobility and self-consumption.
