Our growth in the United States has been driven by flagship facilities such as El Cabo, a wind farm located in Torrance County, New Mexico, one of the windiest and most climatically challenging areas in the country - major storms are frequent and temperatures can exceed 50º C. El Cabo was commissioned in 2017 through our US subsidiary, Avangrid Renewables. With a total capacity of 298 MW, this facility is capable of generating clean electricity for around 900,000 households.

Gamesa was selected to supply 142 G114/2100 turbines, with a unit capacity of 2.1 MW, to equip this wind power project, which required an investment of approximately $500 million dollars.

* AVANGRID, Inc. is 81.50 % owned by Iberdrola, S. A.

In 2015, we secured the full offtake agreement for the plant and resumed construction of the project, which had slowed while some constraints related to electricity transmission were successfully resolved. On-site construction work included civil and road works on the total project area of 56,000 acres, comprising private and state land managed by the New Mexico State Land Office.

In addition, true to our commitment to promoting local employment, the El Cabo Wind Farm provided employment for several local businesses.

Iberdrola, world leader in renewable energies

At Iberdrola, we decided to commit to renewable energies more than two decades ago as a fundamental pillar on which to build our safe, clean and competitive business model. Thanks to this vision, we are today world leaders in renewable energies, reaching 42,187 MW of renewables in operation by the end of 2023.

This commitment is reflected in our record investment plan of €47 billion in the period 2023-2025, of which we will allocate 17,000 million euros to the renewables business. With these investments, we will increase our installed renewable capacity by 12,100 MW to 52,000 MW by 2025 —6,300 MW of photovoltaic, 3,100 MW of onshore wind, 1,800 MW of offshore, 700 MW of batteries and 200 MW of hydro.
