Iberdrola maintains its firm footing in the renewable energy sector by leading the construction of Tâmega (Portugal), one of the largest energy storage facilities in Europe, to which two wind farms have been added, making it one of the largest energy initiatives in the country's history.

Tâmega project
The Tâmega hydroelectric complex is one of the largest energy projects in Portugal's history. The total installed capacity reaches 1,158 MW and avoids the emission of 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
It stores as much energy as 400,000 electric vehicles: up to 20 GWh. For this reason, it is considered one of the largest batteries in Europe.
The stored energy enables the entire population of the Porto metropolitan area: 1.7 million people - to be supplied with energy 24 hours a day.
The Tâmega project is a major engineering and construction project combining the construction of three dams and three power plants.
Rising demand and the EU's target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 require the production of a large amount of renewable energy. Hydropower and storage are key building blocks for a clean energy transition in the future.
Iberdrola and the EIB (European Investment Bank) have signed a €175 million green loan to support the construction of the Tâmega wind farms. The new EIB loan is backed by a guarantee from the Spanish export credit agency, Cesce.
